Put up for sale by Cornette de Saint Cyr IMPORTANT six-leaf screen Japan, EDO period 174 x 378 cm (unfolded) Rare and beautiful screen presenting an episode of Genji monogatari (known as Genji) major work of Japanese literature, telling about The Adventures of Genji, Imperial prince unable to access the throne, naturally beautiful, versed in poetry, and Great Seducer. Genji is represented here on a bridge in front of a woman who presents him with a young girl descended from a palanquin supported by bearers. The small size of the girl is probably related to an episode in which he allegedly had a young bride under fifteen. Some accidents and old visible restorations. Provenance: - sale Sotheby's 1972-Belgian private Collection-acquired from Galerie Alain Tamenne (Brussels) on 19 June 1978.
